Overview

Plant Care App is a smart mobile platform designed for urban plant lovers and beginners who want to care for their plants with clarity, ease, and emotional connection.

It pairs with the client’s core product: A smart plant pot with sensors and AI — the primary business objective.

As the app supports the hardware product, my role as a Digital Product Designer was to ensure both emotional and functional value while driving adoption and retention.

The app helps users monitor their plant’s condition, receive suggestions, interact with AI, build meaningful routines and relationships around plant care.

Research Process 🔎

In the Desk Research phase, we analyzed user behavior and market patterns using credible sources:

Sources: Aggregated insights from

Plant Parent Survey: emotional connection with plants

Planta App Review: lacks personalized AI

Psychology Today: mental health benefits

National Gardening Survey: rise of beginner plant owners

Key insights gathered:

➤ Urban users feel disconnected from nature — plants offer calm & balance

➤ Beginners fear “killing the plant” due to lack of knowledge

➤ Most plant apps lack real personalization and real-time updates

✸ Primary Audience

Young to mid-age urban users (25–45) who are new to plant care. They grow plants for aesthetics, relaxation, and self-care, often at home or in workspaces. They seek intuitive tools, visual guidance, and motivation to build a consistent plant care habit.

Detailed Insights

🌱 User Behavior & Psychology

Plant lovers often find joy and relaxation in nurturing greenery but may feel discouraged if their plants die unexpectedly. They crave clear, timely feedback to feel confident in their care efforts.

📊 Data Literacy & Guidance Needs

Non-technical users struggle to interpret data like soil moisture or temperature. They prefer simplified insights, ideally explained by a supportive AI or contextual prompts.

🧠 Habit Building & Responsibility

Users see plant care as a way to cultivate mindfulness, patience, and daily responsibility. Successful plant growth reinforces positive emotion and a sense of personal accomplishment.

🏡 Desired Experience: Calm, Friendly, Personal

Users expect a gentle, stress-free app interface that reflects the soothing nature of plant care — with room for personalization and emotional connection to their specific plants.

tHE PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED

Many people love plants, but lack the knowledge or consistency to care for them. Users have difficulty monitoring plant health and lack engaging, personalized care guidance. Most apps today are either too technical or not personalized.

A key insight I received from a user was:
What if I use your smart pot and my plant still dies?”

This reveals a critical trust gap in the product experience:
Users assume that “smart” technology should guarantee results, not just support the process.

When outcomes (e.g., a plant dying) do not match expectations, it causes emotional disappointment and blame toward the product or brand.

This reveals a trust problem — users expect technology to guarantee success. When results don’t match expectations, frustration arises.

What if I use your smart pot and my plant still dies?”

Plant Care needs to guide users realistically, provide feedback, educate them through AI, and emotionally support them — even when things go wrong.

As a designer, I had to find a way to:

  • Educate users about natural variables

  • Provide transparent, non-blaming explanations

  • Offer emotional support to rebuild user trust

📦 🌧 Care Failure Feedback / Why It Died Report

Provide friendly explanations when plant health declines. Instead of blame, the app offers insight like: “Your basil may have been overwatered. Try letting the soil dry more next time.”

This builds user trust through gentle guidance and continuous learning.

THE Solutions

💡 Core Solutions (for MVP)

✸ Visual Plant Status Cards

Show plant health using icons, color-coded visuals, and clear graphs. Makes data easy to understand without decoding numbers.

✸ Contextual AI Assistant

Supports users by answering real-time questions and providing care tips tailored to their plant’s condition.

✸ Care Failure Transparency

Explains “what went wrong” when a plant dies or gets sick — with gentle, educational feedback to rebuild user trust.

🚀 Future Add-ons

✸ Gamified Learning Journey

Helps users stay engaged by turning care steps into levels, challenges, and badges. Builds habit through fun.

✸ Emotional Reactions

Make plants feel “alive” with emotional feedback (e.g. smiley icon when healthy, sad face when dehydrated) to build empathy, emotional bonding, and long-term engagement.

Reflection

This project allowed me to explore how design, smart technology, and emotional experience can come together to support plant lovers.

Despite time constraints and no real user testing, we delivered a solid MVP focused on clarity, habit-building, and emotional engagement. It helped me grow as a designer by thinking beyond visuals — toward real behavior and value.

This project shaped my ability to balance emotional design with technical IoT constraints — a key UX leadership skill.
